Product Description: Embark on a transformative, hands-on experience with our Yurt Build Workshop at Primal Path Academy. This immersive workshop is designed for those who seek to connect deeply with traditional craftsmanship, sustainable living, and the primal satisfaction of building a shelter with your own hands. Over the course of several days, you will learn the art of constructing a yurt—a portable, round tent traditionally used by nomadic cultures—as you work alongside expert instructors in a supportive, community-focused environment.

Participants will enjoy gourmet farm-to-table meals, with organic, gluten-free, and vegetarian options available for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and dessert, ensuring that everyone’s dietary needs are met with the highest quality ingredients. Accommodation is set in the beautiful rolling hills and lush landscape of Caldwell County, TX, just 45 min South of Austin. BYO tent or camper, with hookups available for your convenience. Indoor bathrooms are also provided to make your stay comfortable.

Daily Structure:

“Good Morning, Builders! Breakfast Awaits!” at 6:30 AM. Start your day with a delicious farm-to-table breakfast, fueling up for the hands-on work ahead.

Get started with your yurt build at 8:00 AM, diving into the morning’s tasks alongside our expert instructors.

“Take a Break, Fuel Your Build – Lunch is Served!” at 11:45 AM. Enjoy a refreshing midday meal, with plenty of organic, gluten-free, and vegetarian options, and recharge for the afternoon.

Work continues from 12:30 PM until 2:30 PM, when it’s time for our Beat The Heat Break. Relax in the A/C and take this opportunity to discuss the second half of the day with your fellow builders.

From 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM, it’s back to work, as you bring your yurt closer to completion.

Finally, at 7:30 PM, “Dinner Time! Celebrate Your Build with a Delicious Meal!” Gather around for a well-deserved gourmet dinner, reflecting on the day’s progress and enjoying the company of your fellow builders.

Daily Breakdown:

Day 1: Introduction and Foundation

  • Morning (3-4 hours): Begin with an introduction to the history and cultural significance of yurts. Learn about the materials and tools needed for the build, focusing on the sustainable sourcing of wood, canvas, and other natural elements.

  • Afternoon (3-4 hours): Site selection and preparation. Clear the ground, level the build area, and lay the foundation ring. Begin constructing the floor platform, ensuring stability and durability.

Day 2: Wall Construction

  • Morning (3-4 hours): Learn the techniques for crafting the lattice wall (khana). Cut, sand, and treat the wood for the lattice strips. Start assembling the wall sections.

  • Afternoon (3-4 hours): Continue with the assembly of the lattice walls. Learn how to properly measure and secure the wall sections, ensuring a perfect circular form.

Day 3: Roof Assembly

  • Morning (3-4 hours): Construct the roof wheel (crown or toono) and rafters (uni). Understand the importance of balance and symmetry in the yurt’s roof design.

  • Afternoon (3-4 hours): Begin installing the rafters, connecting them to the roof wheel and the top of the lattice walls. Learn the traditional knotting techniques to secure the structure.

Day 4: Insulation and Weatherproofing

  • Morning (3-4 hours): Discuss insulation options and weatherproofing techniques. Cut and install the felt or other insulating materials between the lattice and the outer canvas.

  • Afternoon (3-4 hours): Begin draping the outer canvas over the structure. Learn how to properly tension and secure the covering to withstand various weather conditions.

Day 5: Door and Window Installation

  • Morning (3-4 hours): Construct and install the yurt door, focusing on traditional woodworking techniques. Ensure it fits perfectly within the structure.

  • Afternoon (3-4 hours): Install windows (if applicable), ensuring they are weather-sealed. Discuss ventilation options and natural light considerations.

Day 6: Interior Customization

  • Morning (3-4 hours): Focus on interior design elements, such as laying floor coverings, and installing a central support column, if required. Learn about traditional furnishings and their placements.

  • Afternoon (3-4 hours): Finish any remaining work on the yurt’s structure and interior. Celebrate the completion of the build with a communal gathering inside the newly constructed yurt.

Day 7: Final Inspection and Celebration

  • Morning (3-4 hours): Perform a final inspection of the yurt, ensuring all elements are secure and weatherproof. Review the skills learned throughout the week and discuss maintenance tips.

  • Afternoon (3-4 hours): Conclude with a group reflection on the experience, celebrating the successful build. Participants are awarded certificates of completion, symbolizing their mastery of this ancient craft.
